Google is marketing 411 service through billboards

September 19th, 2007

Just read it on Search Engine Land that Google is marketing its free 411 product using conventional advertising means in upstate NewYork. This is probably a test campaign to test the effectiveness of the medium. They sure seem to doing it Google-way.

As per Search Engine Land:

The company, which has historically not marketed its products (although that is changing), is using a very traditional ad medium to promote its non-traditional local voice search offering. However, people will see this when they’re driving in their cars, which is one of the expected use cases. Another interesting thing is the location, a relatively obscure rural area.

I personally like the Ad. It is simple and cute.

Vic
( Hot From Silicon Valley ):

I am with Charles Hope who is the co-founder of Blip.tv. Blip.tv is
making waves in the video circles, challenging the big guns like
YouTube, Yahoo! Video and Google Video. Charles welcome to the
podcast.

Charles
( Blip.tv ):

Thank you.

Vic
( Hot From Silicon Valley ):
So,
Charles every startup has a story. Blip.tv is getting a lot of
traction in the blogosphere. So talk about how Blip.tv got started.

Charles
( Blip.tv ):

Well.. let’s see, five of us or I should say four of us that’s me,
Mike, Justin and Jared, were on our weekends working on a piece of
software which was a knowledge management application, and we came
across video blogging in the spring of 2005. We were really impressed
by the power of..you know…the potential power of the format and we
also realized that this was the potential application for so it took
us about a week to customize it a little bit further…

DEMOFall 2006: W5 Networks

September 29th, 2006

W5_networks
W5 Networks are in the process of replacing paper price tags in supermarkets and stores to electronic shelf labels. This in essence means instantaneous price updates and changes made to all products store-wide as it goes on sale, or is part of a promotion. There’s an LED that displays the price, and the central control makes sure all prices are accurate and up-to-date. Again very 21st Century, and should be there in every store soon enough.

September 29th, 2006

Paul Jacobs, the CEO of QualCOMM talks about the innovation in our mobile lifestyles and  topics like - mobile video on demand, in this speech at DEMOFall. From where mobility started, and what it meant then to what it has become now and where we are headed. Paul compared the features we will expect these devices to have and globally where these technologies stand at the present time. An interesting talk about mobile technology and faster responding networks, for the new forms of media that people expect to now have available at their mobile devices. These devices need to be accommodating to all the various features people want combined to one - the digital camera, MP3 player, phone, web-enabled, GPS- enabled and so on.

DEMOFall 2006: eSnips

September 27th, 2006

Esnips
eSnips lets you share content online
- regardless of the kind content type. There are number of different sites where we are uploading and sharing content today, and each site has it’s own social network.

eSnips targets mainstream users that would be frustrated with too
many places to share their content. You can upload any type of file to
eSnips and create as many separate sharing environments that you want.
You can even sell some of the content you put into the system.

There are close to 1 Million users and about 3 Million visitors per month.

eSnips uses a folder metaphor that allows you to organize your
content. Folders can be shared publicly or kept private, and are tagged to make them
discoverable. eSnips automatically suggests other folders that might be
interesting based on the content in your folder.

eSnips is free and you get 1GB of storage. So check it out.

DEMOFall 2006: Yoriwa - LeapTag

September 27th, 2006

Leaptag
“Personalized discovery tag that learns what you want and delivers it when you want it”

The product is a plugin that you install for the browser.  I had a
brief demonstration on how the system works and it is interesting.  The
process starts by defining some areas of interest.  Behind the scenes,
the application goes out and searches its index.

As you use the application, you are able to give items a Thumbs Up
or Thumbs Down.  Based on your feedback the system adjusts
automatically and refines its search technique to bring you
increasingly relevent content.

It returns News & Blogs, Websites, Books sorted out into an
accordion interface.  There is also a social component to the
application.  Users can share their finds with their contacts - it
seems to be based on Skype.  From there, you are able to see what your
group of friends thinks as well.

DEMOFall 2006: HeyLetsGo

September 27th, 2006

Heyletsgo
They want to help us make real connections with real people.  They’re combining a local event guide with social networking.

I had a chance to see a demo up close before the presentation and it is an impressive solution to a real problem.  HeyLetsGo allows you to find not just interesting events but also to learn more about who’s going and what you might expect.

They have a BuzzLevel measure (patent pending) that is like Page
Rank for events. The range of events is very broad and covers much more
than tech events. One nice feature is that I can see what my friends
are planning on doing - a pivot I find missing from something like
Upcoming.

The site also can recommend people that have a lot in common with
you and potentially help you find new places and people to hang out
with.

Another nice feature is real-time integration that enables you to
report back on an event WHILE it’s happening. That’s having your finger
on the pulse of an event.

DEMOFall 2006: Cuts

September 27th, 2006

Cuts
Cuts is a really interesting system that enables you to edit the
video you have in a truly innovative way. In essence, Cuts allows you
add in some metadata to your own media files that handles skipping,
muting and commenting on the media as it plays throughout various
points in the playback.

This is entirely legal since you are required to have the media on your own machine.  They’ve built a community around this and are growing really fast.

Recently, their competitor ‘JumpCut.com’ got acquired by Yahoo!.

September 27th, 2006

Ibloks
“People want to create like pros”

iBloks allows you to remix your own media. The system has an
interesting 3D interface that allows you to animate and paint onto a
moving palette. iBloks has a unique integration with Windows Vista.

iBloks lets you publish to cell phone, video ipod, PSP, and the web.
They make money by letting people buy digital content and mods from
them. They sell from 99 cents to $9.99. “We’re moving from
user-generated content to community-generated content”.

DEMOFall 2006: NanoLearning

September 27th, 2006

Nanolearning
“NanoLearning is a marketplace for small chunks of learning created by people like you and me”.

NanoLearning provides a platform for everyone to create their own
courseware that leverages the hidden expertise they possess. The tool
allows you to attach audio and video to accompany any slide. They also
provide a variety of methods for you to easily design in interactivity.
There are even modules that seem more like games than tests.

The site is live now and welcoming users. A Developer’s Kit is in
the works that will allow developers to extend and enhance the
interactivity modules.

DEMOFall 2006: SiteKreator

September 27th, 2006

Sitekreator
SiteKreator really makes the process of designing your own web site
simple as ‘123′. Before our eyes, he is putting together a site for
the California Center for Aesthetic Dentistry.

There are a number of interesting shortcuts and applets like a File
Manager, Slide Show Manager, and Forums/Blog. In addition, there is the
ability to design custom forms.

A newsletter tool helps small businesses recruit customers.

Pricing starts at just $15 a month.
